In my opinion, one of the most challenges that face Europe concerns renewable energy.

The main question is what is « #green energy » ?

For the European Commission gaz and nuclear central had been labelled #green. On one side, gaz and nuclear energy are qualified green because of decarbonized or low carbonate rate during use. On the other side, what about environmental destruction for drilling, catastrophes danger or dramatic environmental consequences during waste storage ?

The project labeling nuclear and gaz as green contains a transitional period until 2030 for gaz or 2045 for nuclear energy. Moreover, there is a schism between European countries. Some are pro-nuclear or pro-gaz other are against and speak of « error ».

The solution is to define clearly what is green energy, stand together and maybe use a different word, less biased.

One of the biggest #digital challenge faces by Europe is linked to social media.

A part of revenue earn by influencers come from product placement. Those placements are for an important part scam products or in worst case, ghost products or even counterfeit. Influencers show brand or luxury products but followers receive poor quality products, when they receive it, or even illegal products from counterfeit or scam. In the most post, they also add a promotion code for product drop-shipped that cost nothing.

Europe must protect buyers from those practices.

One solution could be to create European laws and dissuasive fine for those who sold those kind of product. To the influencers and/or the agency that propose those kind of partnerships but also and above all the firm. A digital authority dedicated on social media should be created in order to prevent, control and punish those misleading practices.

The projet « Vélo Route » is co-funded by Europe and Brussels 🇪🇺🇧🇪

This « Vélo Route » project changes the North-South cycle route in Brussels by adding facilities to increase the quality and the confort for cyclists 🚲

But it is part of a bigger cycle road, the REVER project which is a networks of green roads in Europe 🌱

A young student women at the ULB declares « this network of cycle roads are really essential in Brussels […] here most of the people take their bikes as principal mobility even if it is raining or cold outside […] I dream of bigger and longer roads to connect every big city ! The network REVER is so cool ! Thanks Europe ! »

BRUSOC is a project aims to implement and manage a financial instrument for allocating advantageous loans to businesses in the integration, #social or cooperative economy. This system aims in particular to support the creation and development of businesses in the Brussels area while improving the capacity for professional integration of vulnerable populations.

During the Covid pandemic, they created a loan to respond to cash flow problems and promoted the restart and development of business activities impacted by the Covid crisis.

They were supported by the European Union and Brussels Capital Region through the FEDER fund in 2014.

NATIONAL CIVIC HACKATHON

NATIONAL CIVIC HACKATHON #EuroCM

On the 29/10/2021 we organized our National Civic Hackathon ! It took place in Bruxelles and gather 26 people from all ages and thoughts. Due to covid, 2 sessions where organized to respect safe distances. 

During those sessions, our participants discussed over three main topics : Digital, Green and Social. Wonderful and Insightful ideas came up : 

  • Digital : two main subjects were on 
    • Bad impact of social medias due to unrealistic pictures ans wrong body images sent to young generation. The solution is to oblige influencers to put a trademark when photo are retouched  
    • The alarming amount of scam and or bad qualities products sold by influencers. The solution is to create laws and punitions for those who sold those kind of product, a police dedicated on social media should be created
  • Green : two main themes were selected :
    • We heard about global warming and simple gesture to do but in university, in the street, at school, in building… garbage cans are or missing or without a selective sorting. Europe must oblige institutions like school, university and state to install selective sorting cans
    • Diesel and gasoline are polluting the Earth. People who are willing to change their ways to transport are stuck because of the lack of other energy stations as LGP or Electric. Europe can, as charger for mobile, impose a unique electric charger for car and incite for LGP and electric station
  • Social : two concerns emerged : 
    • Students can be blocked in their studies. The solution is to let them access freely to database like they are already eligible to visit museums freely. The same should go with online database used for their studies
    • So many homeless people will be kept in the streets. The solution is first to offered a psychologic aid in order to understand why they’re here and progressively reinsert them into the society

 

FAke or FAct Workshop

The workshop/presentation we did took place on the 17th of october In Latvia. We presented the things we learned in the project, talking about how fake news originated and the impact it has had on our society. We also talked about how widespread fake news is currently, who spreads them and for what purpose. In the end we discussed how to actually distinguish fake news from real ones and showed the CRAAP test.

  • Can you give us your opinion about the project “Fake or Fact”? What is the most important thing you have learned during the training?

I am very glad to have had the chance to participate in this project.

 To begin with, the opportunity to learn more about misinformation and fake news is really something unique, as unfortunately, formal education usually does not properly cover this topic. The workshops and activities were quite enjoyable; Looking back, I have learned so much without even noticing!

Secondly, I am grateful I learned so much about fake news and combating them,but also about Spain, about all the other countries that participated, about speaking and communicating in English and so on.

Additionally, I feel I really improved myself as an individual, through travelling and socializing with the other participants.

  • In your opinion, how can young people deal with propaganda, misinformation and fake news?

I believe that the best way to fight against fake news is to first learn how to identify them. After identifying them becomes a habit to the reader, the next step would be to raise awareness about the status quo and impact of misinformation.

Raising awareness can be done by projects such as this Erasmus+, but I feel that all countries should step in and add this topic to the education curriculum.

  • How do you plan to share and use your knowledge in your local community?

The first thing I will probably do, would be to debunk as much fake news I hear from friends and family as possible, providing them with the truth (where possible).

After they notice that a huge amount of the information they have on various topics is many times false, I will provide them with the tips , tools and advice that I have learned in the project, in order to help them develop the habit I was mentioning earlier (to identify misinformation).

The last step would be to ask them to do the same thing to others.

  • Can you give us your opinion about the project “FAke or FAct“? What is the most important thing you have learned during the training?

This was my first Erasmus+ project so i don’t have anything to compare it to but I think it was really fun and definitely worth it, I’m lucky that this was my first experience. All the workshops were interesting and I learned something new every time. Although I already had some knowledge about the term “fake news”, now the first thing that comes in mind isn’t Donald Trump but all the different variations of it and how easy is it to spread false information. After this training, I have more knowledge how to spot fake news and have a proper action plan how to verify if the sources, researches etc. are real.

  • In your opinion, how can young people deal with propaganda, misinformation and fake news? Do you have your own tips?

I don’t trust everything I see on the internet, everyone at a young age should learn this and not forget that. When I look for information about certain topic, I look for a reputable source and not first thing I find. I fact check all the things I have found out, one source isn’t enough. Pupils should learn about media literacy in schools, in few countries young people already have that chance, but in some – curriculum is outdated. Not enough grown ups know how to properly deal with propaganda, misinformation and fake news, so they aren’t equipt to teach their kids how to be safe on the internet.

  • How do you plan to share and use your knowledge in your local community?

I have already started telling my family, friends and acquaintances about my experience in this project and what I have learned and will continue doing that. I’m also planning on suggesting the director of Children and Youth center in my hometown that we could held training for children about media literacy, and I could be one of speakers and lead some workshops as in this project.

“The workshop which I organized took place on 23.10.2021 in Astorka- Learning and Accomodation Center of Janacek Academy of Performing Arts in Brno, Czech Republic. As I am also part of ESN Brno (Erasmus Student Network Brno) participants of this workshop were international students studying in Brno. We talked about what is fake news, how to distinguish them and how to spread awareness about this topic. The workshop was a great chance for promoting the training course “FAke or FAct” in which I recently took part as well as for promoting the Erasmus Plus programme.
